![]() Operating System: iOS, Android, Web browserĬoming in hot on Final Draft’s heels, StudioBinder is a top screenwriting software that has the versatility that other programs lack because they constrain themselves to being desktop based.Price: Free with paid content (different monthly options depending on which plan is chosen).Screen writing software that offers a one-stop shop for all your script production needs.Everything else in the software is designed to either make the process faster or to aid you in the job of creating and keeping track of characters, ideas, plot points, notes, and revisions. What I've just described is everything you need to take your script from first to final draft. This newest interface for Final Draft delivers more information at the top and less information at the bottom but overall feels cleaner and somewhat more elegant. You can also filter your search by element and replace anything you search for. The data on the left not only tells you which page and scene number your cursor currently occupies but with a click on either pops open a box that allows you to jump to any scene by number or search for any text. The crosshairs icon shifts everything to Focus Mode in which almost every element of the user interface disappears, leaving you with just the script like a virtual typewriter. Clicking on the Crescent Moon, shifts to a white type on black background view that's easier on your eyes at night. From the right, a handy slide that you adjust the magnification or zoom of your view of the script. Under your script runs a specialized toolbar with gadgets relating to the user interface and search. And we'll see later that in some cases cheaters can prosper. In screenwriting, this is called cheating. The ruler displays the margins of the elements your cursor currently occupies, and that you change those margins for individual elements. Just beneath the outline editor lives our old friend, the ruler. If you decide it's not a toolbox you need it in your garage, you can hide it. I devote a whole chapter to the outline editor later. Plus the outline editor, true to its name, simultaneously displays your outline so you can track your pages, your scene and your outline story beats all at the same time. What's more, the outline editor is interactive allowing you to jump anywhere in your script by clicking on the desired scene or page number. With it, you can chart your narrative course to make sure everything happens when it's supposed to. Well, why is that helpful? The outline editor pins every scene in your script to its page number. Instead of marking off inches like a tab ruler might, it's tracking pages. That thing just under the tool bar looks like a speedometer for a spaceship, but it's actually one of Final Draft 12's biggest new features, the outline editor. And by customizing your toolbar, you can up that percentage to near 100. Clicking on these buttons will deliver 80% of what you need to format and revise your script. If you're a mouse or track pad lover, the toolbar is home sweet home. They do contain specialized commands, but by and large if you use word processing software you should feel comfortable. Many of these menus, such as File, Edit, Window and Help, follow the basic guidelines of all applications. It's comforting to know that when in doubt, the tool you need is up here, somewhere. ![]() The menu bar allows you to access every feature of Final Draft. At the top of the window is the menu bar. This main area is also used for specialized views such as Index Cards, Scene View and to view work on the Beat Board. Only your texts is displayed so you can shift into creative high gear. In what Final Draft calls Speed View you don't see page breaks or any other extraneous elements. In Page View, the page breaks are actually represented by gray gutters between the virtual pages. You can see lines where page breaks would occur should you print your script. You can view your script as an endlessly scrollable document. The bulk of the window is dedicated to the view of your work in progress. The basic design should look pretty familiar. Whether you're using the Windows or macOS version Final Draft follows the basic interface guidelines of all applications. The user interface is highly specialized, customizable and designed to get a very specific job done fast. Final Draft is to a word processor, as a race car is to a station wagon. ![]()
